and the imaginarysciencecircus

once upon a time there were four small boys. they were abandoned by their parents and left to fend for themselves in fog lane park. for years they lived on hand outs and scraps robbed from the bins, until one day, adam, for it was he who held the spark of ancoats in his hand, using only an old ring pull and an amalgom of loose then compacted bark chippings taken from under the swings, fashioned a small wooden...thing. the others were most impressed and took it in turn to hold the thing. using the special language that they had developed to communicate with each other whilst living in the suburban wilderness they named the thing 'gavin'. the gavin was good and they saw that it was good, but it didn't make a sound until phil, for it was he who cradled in his hairless bosom the spirit of miles platting, having recently feasted on the carcass of a local moggy, had the idea of stretching the deceased creatures whiskers over the body of the gavin. to all the boys delight the gavin sprang into musical life and they each took turns stroking their fingers accross the taught whiskers of the previously consumed domestic pet. how they laughed and danced merrily through the night as each player of the gavin invented their own tunes to impress the others.

adams tunes were complicated and long and his singing attracted more cats and dogs for the boys to make more gavins with. phil's tunes were rigorously arranged and he would not reveal them to the other boys until he had sat behind a tree for up to three hours writing in the dust. paul's tunes were strange as paul, for some reason, did not take to the gavin as much as the other boys. instead of strumming the whiskers he would turn the gavin upside down and just hit it with a twig. paul hit the gavin and verily the hardness of the hit was more than ample. they all grew up and formed a band with gavins and singing and paul's new special instrument the 'daves'. phil played bass gavin, mike rhythm gavin, adam, lead gavin and paul had his own selection of daves; the kick-dave, the snare-dave and his tims (1st, 2nd and floor tims).

mike's tunes were perfect and everybody said so and were prepared to sign documents to that effect. they called themselves fishonastick and although their instruments were made from cats, dogs and bark chippings they became very famous and lived happily ever after. there was no imagainrysciencecircus, it just looks nice written down.

well that's how i remember it anyway
